The classical dance style Bharatha Natyam is an ancient dance form in India, which has evolved over thousands of years. Mime and storytelling are important parts of India’s dance traditions. Performers are often very animated and able to convey messages even in the absence of speech.
Ramya Raman is a classical Bharatha Natyam dancer with ten years of performing and teaching experience. Coming from a family of dancers, her dance training started at the young age of four, from her mother and Guru Dr. Jayanthi Raman. She completed her arangetram in 2004 at Chennai, India. She received individualized training for her arangetram from the renowned Guru Adyar K. Lakshman.
Currently working at Oregon Health Sciences University OHSU - as a researcher in Immunology, Raman continues to perform and actively teach dance.
During her undergraduate years, Raman received her minor in World Dance, gaining experience in modern and world dance. In 2010, she received the prestigious Fulbright Research grant to study Indian dance and movement therapy for autistic children in Chennai, India.
She took advanced training and received her Diploma in Bharatha Natyam from Bharatha Kalanjali Academy of Bharatha Nayam in Chennai, India under the guidance of the illustrious Gurus: Smt. Shantha and Sri. VP Dhanajayan.
Raman has also trained in Natvangum and Carnatic music under Guru Seetharam Sharma, who was faculty at the institution Kalakshetra in Chennai, India.
She has attended various workshops presented by esteemed dancers and Gurus such as Padma Subramaniam, Adyar K. Lakshman, Shobana, and Chitra Vishweshwaran.
She has performed numerous solo concerts and participated in major ballet productions that have toured locally and regionally in the US and abroad. Raman is an assistant teacher and choreographer at the Natya Dance Academy in Portland, OR.
